![]() Silicon’s value in the tech industry is what led to the technology-focused region of Northern California being informally called Silicon Valley. For these reasons, silicon is commonly used as a material in many electronics, such as microchips and circuit boards. Silicon works very well as a semiconductor of electricity, and things made out of it tend to be light and flexible. Because it is an element, silicon cannot be chemically broken down into any smaller mass. Silicon is a nonmetallic element with atomic number 14. ![]() Both forms find use in modern electronics, but crystalline is the most. Elemental silicon has two basic forms amorphous, which has no regular structure, and crystalline, in which the atoms are arranged into a regular lattice. In this article, we explain what silicon and silicone are, detail the differences between them, and give examples of products they are used to make. Silicon is a chemical element which has specific properties useful in modern electronics, such as semi-conduction. Generally, Si compounds exist in different soil fractions such as solid, adsorbed or liquid phases ( Sauer et al., 2006 ) ( Figure Figure1a 1a ). The words silicon and silicone are often confused with each other because they look so similar and both refer to materials that are commonly used to make a wide variety of things. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth crust with a mean share of 28.8 (dry weight basis) (Epstein, 1999) mostly ranging between 50 and 400 g Si kg-1 of soil (Kovda, 1973). In fact, the late 20th century and 21st century have been dubbed The Silicon Age. Silica (SiO2) as quartz or quartzite is used to produce silicon ferroalloys and silicon metal. Silicon in the form of silicates constitutes more than 25 of the Earth's crust. Notably, the element has many uses in the modern economy. Silicon (Si) is a light chemical element that combines with oxygen and other elements to form silicates. Si-28 is under research for the improvement of the thermal conductivity of semiconductors. The name silicon is derived from the Latin word silicis meaning flint. Application of Silicon isotopes Silicon 28 (Si 28). It is a metalloid with a blue-gray luster. The term silicone was based on the term silicon because silicones are made out of chains of silicon, oxygen, and other elements. The element silicon (Si) is a hard, brittle, crystalline solid. Silicones are synthetic materials similar to rubbers that are used to make a wide variety of products, such as adhesives and lubricants. Silicon is a naturally occurring element that is commonly used to make electronics, such as microchips and circuit boards.
